Wood Mice

This photograph is actually from last year, but who doesn’t love a picture of baby Wood Mice. They can be a pain, for example this year they feasted on our Radishes. However, they are important to the ecology of the farm. In fact Tawny owls often don’t breed unless there is a ready supply of Wood Mice. They hoover up unwanted seeds from the veg beds such as Acorns, Ash and Sycamore seeds and eat a number of unwanted pests. After I accidental disturbed this nest, expertly built under a tarpaulin, I watched the mother mouse tentatively move the babies to a nearby hiding place before she found a new nest site.
